Scott Berkun has written his 1000, and gave some great food for thought.
Congratulations for your achievement Scott, you are doing a hell of a job!
I will leave here some comments of my own, please read and leave a comment letting me know what you think:
1. We need to ask more questions
It is very important to ask the right questions in order to get the right answers, many people don’t ask any questions at all. So invest some time practicing asking good questions, learn to listen and be very critical about the information you receive.
2. We confuse tech progress with social and personal progress
Technology in itself will not change the world, to change something you have to change yourself, technology only provides you with the tools to do it. I have seen too many times people adopting tools to become more productive or more organized without changing their behavior, and they inevitable fail. You will not become more organized, or more productive just for using some new high-tech tool, first you have to decide to act, and then choose whatever tools are available to help you in your propose.
3. Integrity is the proximity of your beliefs to your actions, and we need more integrity
To have integrity you must act by your values, not only preach them. As Anthony Robbins says “The quality of your life is the quality of your communication, first your inner communication then your communication with other”, so always act in accordance with your own values otherwise you will perceive yourself as someone not trustworthy and your life will like a living hell. If you cannot trust in yourself who are you going to trust?
4. There is a downward spiral of empty consumption
In my opinion, this one is related with the first one, we live in a society of consumption, buying stuff not because we want or because we need, but because the market need to sell in order to survive. I have a theory that we all have limited levels of happiness and sorrow, and for limited periods of time, so you cannot be infinitely happy forever or infinitely unhappy forever. We are happy when we realize ourselves, and not because we have a new car or a new house. Try to live a simpler live and enjoy the little pleasures you found along the way. Remember is the journey that counts, not the end.
5. This is the greatest time in history for creatives
I had not yet realized this, thank you Scott for opening my eyes. We are free, the gatekeepers are really gone, which is great! There is no one between us and the world, and it is much easier to accomplish our dreams. But be aware that with great power came’s great responsibility, so remember to always act in accordance to your values, because you are more exposed that ever.
