fear.less - WHERE'S THE IKEA MANUAL FOR...LIFE?

I received this article by email from the fear.less magazine, as probably did you if you subscribed to their mailing list. It was written by Matt, fear.less editor, I found it so inspiring that I decided to share it with you here. If you like the article subscribe to their newsletter.
Note: The link to the Nike video was introduced my me.

WHERE'S THE IKEA MANUAL FOR...LIFE?
Life doesn't come with an instruction manual, and most of its components don't either. But who really enjoys reading them anyway?Even if we think we've accepted that sometimes we must press on without a roadmap, we still convince ourselves that maybe we'll get a guide instead. A mentor, someone who's walked our intended path before, and even if they haven't concretely charted it down, they can lead us to safety.
Sometimes we don't get that either. Whether we're starting an experimental book or launching a new business model or about to enter a tense and difficult conversation, we can easily end up without the blessing of any sort of direction. We don't have enough information to reason our way through comfortably, and our emotions are a mess of doubt and fear.
The apparent answer that I always get is both infuriatingly simple, and often repeated by people who want to sell us shoes: "Just do it."
A lot of the apprehension from trying something new comes from the fear of failure and ridicule - but when you attempt something no one else around has expertise in, it's difficult for them to persecute you for being wrong. Failure becomes just a valuable learning experience, not a crippling catastrophe.
And that's only if you're wrong. For all you know (because you don't know), you may enjoy a sudden flash of brilliance, like all human beings are prone to do in times of crisis. You may be right. You may write the next forever-quoted sentence, start the next revolution, say the magic passwords that bring a conflict to an
unexpected and peaceful resolution.
But how will you know if you don't just do it?

Give your books away
![]() |
I use BookCrossing to share my books with anyone who is willing to read them and take good care of them. Once I sent a book to Romania and four years later I still feel that good sensation at the bottom of my belly, that must worth much more than the monetary value of the book, right?
Soon I will send a collection of books that I have repeated (my wife did the same collection before we were married) to a small village in Mozambique so they can establish a local library, and I know that will make more room in my house and a good and warm sensation in my belly.
Try it, give your books (or borrow them if you don't feel comfortable giving them away) to someone you just know that is going to appreciate them, and leave a comment letting us know how you felt.
You can find all my books here, if you want to read some, just let me know and I will be glad to send it to you.

Don't send a duck to eagle school

Francesca Gino, associate professor at Harvard Business School, explains how quiet bosses with proactive teams can be highly successful.
Always be youself
Some people think they have to pretend to be someone they are not just to succeed, they just act the way they think other people expects them to act. And wile they may seem very successful, this people feel like a clown at a funeral. One of the biggest characteristic any leader can have is authenticity.
Did you ever tried to force your kids into eating or bed? If you did I'm confident you were headed for a big fight from with you came very frustrated. Why are children so stubborn! You can't change people, the same way you can't make them do anything they don't want to do. You can however create the desire for change, the same way you can create the desire for action. The only true way to accomplish this is by being authentic, clear, transparent, honest and coherent. People only follow leaders in with they trust. Sure there are other ways to make people want to take action, you can make them do it out of fear or out of necessity, but they will not truly follow you, at first change they will flee like rats in a sinking boat.
Should you give order or ask for advice?
Wile there are excellent leaders that are very assertive giving orders to their followers, this is a kind of leadership that demands a lot of the leader, and very little of the followers. In this situation the followers are comfortable waiting for the leader to decide and to give orders, wile in the other hand the leader must be aware of everything and involved in every decision. This puts a lot of pressure on the leader and none on the team.Wile there are situations where giving orders is necessary, those should be restricted to a minimum. A much better approach is to give directions to the team, and let them know what you expect of them and then be there to listen, to help and to guide whenever necessary. In this situation you put yourself in a position of servant allowing your team to grow and became more responsible and proactive.
Concluding
As mentioned in the video, although you can and you should stretch yourself a little out of your comfort zone, you should not contradict your nature. If you send a duck to the eagle school and then send him to hunt a rabbit, they will probably become friends and go drink a beer at the nearest pub.Have a wonderful day,
R.

Failure: The Secret to Success
"If you have made mistakes, even serious ones, there is always another chance for you. What we call failure is not the falling down, but the staying down."
- Mary Pickford
Failure. The mere thought can paralyze even the most heroic thinkers and keep great ideas off the drawing board. But is failing really that bad? We get an inside look at the mishaps of Honda racers, designers and engineers to learn how they draw upon failure to motivate them to succeed. From poor color choices to blown race engines, these risk-taking individuals provide an honest look at what most people fear most. Watch the film and discover the upside of failure.
